Oral Sedation
- Conscious sedation is a method of performing dental procedures that promotes cooperation and relaxation
while the patient is awake.
- It helps reduce awareness of dental work by causing a “dreamy” state.
- Conscious sedation often has an amnesic effect as well, causing the child to not remember
the entire dental visit.
- It is used on young children and adults with mild to moderate anxiety levels who require dental treatment.
- An oral medicine, usually Versed or Valium, is administered 15 to 60 minutes before treatment time.
- The child’s vital signs such as pulse, blood pressure, and blood oxygen levels using pulse
oximetry are continuously monitored.
- After the procedure, parents monitor the child at home as the sedation wears off.
